A fascinating article in this weeks BRW written by Jessica Gardner highlights just how much email dominates our working day.
In her discussion with researcher Alistair Gordon from Inbox Alliance, Jessica highlighted that Alistair's research showed that 'Most people are not in control of their electronic communicaiton and they react to it in a slave-like fashion.' Alistair believes the corporate communication culture is to blame.
The research carried out by Alistair indicated that most people - 80% in fact check their inbox continuously throughout the day - this is what he believes is disastrous - as soon as they hear the email alert noise they stop what they doing and respond. Jessica highlighted the fact the biggest gain from productivitly as suggested by Alistair Gordon would be as simple as turning off email alerts and only allocating hourly or two hourly timeslots for dealing with emails.
