Getting more time out of your day
In her discussion with researcher Alistair Gordon from Inbox Alliance, Jessica highlighted that Alistair's research showed that 'Most people are not in control of their electronic communicaiton and they react to it in a slave-like fashion.' Alistair believes the corporate communication culture is to blame.
The research carried out by Alistair indicated that most people - 80% in fact check their inbox continuously throughout the day - this is what he believes is disastrous - as soon as they hear the email alert noise they stop what they doing and respond. Jessica highlighted the fact the biggest gain from productivitly as suggested by Alistair Gordon would be as simple as turning off email alerts and only allocating hourly or two hourly timeslots for dealing with emails. Could Goal Setting Actually be Counterproductive?
A very interesting article in the August edition of 'In the Black' magazine posed the question of whether those people who live their life by setting and then trying to achieve their goals miss out on the random opportunities the chaotic world we live in presents us on our journey through life. If you are like me you would of attended hundreds of workshops, seminars and lectures that repeatedly tell you that the practice of working towards set goals is essential for success in life, relationships and business.
Education and Psychology experts Bright and Prior question this traditional view of goal setting by saying that their research indicates that goals only work best under 'controlled conditions' because you can't ignore the complex and unpredictable nature of the real world? These experts believe that goals are best used to motivate us in the short term - perhaps on a day to day or monthly basis because any goals longer than this time frame is subject to the complexity and unexpected nature of life. Who saw the GFC, 9/11, Swine Flu coming??? They believe that people who ridgidly work towards a long term goal - not matter what- may actually be doing themselves a dis- service as they close themselves off from unexpected opportunity because of their focus on the final prize.
I like the idea of being open and ready for opportunity and I think the most useful advice these guys have come up with is what they call the Luck Readiness Index (LRI) - I'm not joking! This index defines a set of characteristics people need to deal with in an uncertain world - they include expecting failure, flexibility, optimism, risk-taking, persistence and best of all - expecting to get lucky. Their research shows that people who are lucky actually expected to be lucky.!
Women in Real Estate - Workshop Content
I had the pleasure of meeting with Julie Ormston last week to speak to her about her upcoming workshop - Women in Real Estate.
The first thing that impressed me about Julie and the workshop she has developed was her unbelievable attention to detail and her willingness to share with others her marketing plans, office procedures and tried and tested templates and systems. If you are looking for some direction and focus or if you especially wish to overhaul your entire real estate business - you will walk out of Julie's workshop with absolutely everything you need including a fully operational business and marketing strategy. There are only 4 or 5 seats left for this workshop and we won't be running it again until the new year so don't miss the boat on this one. (men don't be put off by the title - you are welcome too.!) Women in Real Estate - August
We can't believe how quick the months are flying by this year - already working on what's on in August. July workshops are pretty much booked out with a few seats remaining for Conflict Resolution on July 19. Time Management workshop for July is fully booked but we are running another one on the 2nd November so if you missed out bookings are now open for that workshop. To view our full workshop calender follow this link. http://www.mortonlearning.com.au/coursecalendar.htm
With August comes our first 'Women in Real Estate' workshop which of course is also open to men. Last week I received a rather unusual phone call from an irate member of the public who felt I was discriminating women (of all things) by running a workshop that somehow made them 'different' to men in real estate (still can't work that one out!!!). We promptly explained to the irate caller that both men and women were welcome and that workshop was titlled Women in Real Estate because - yes the last time we checked women were different to men and they often do have different committments to balance when running a business and a family. We didn't see any harm in offering a workshop that addressed this. Did I mention this caller was a woman??? Go figure???
Anyway enough of the venting, if you are looking for an interesting workshop about balancing work/life committments in the world of real estate then look no further than our workshop Women in Real Estate with the inspirational Julie Ormston! We have limited seats available for this workshop so book early to secure your spot. http://www.mortonlearning.com.au/womeninrealestate.htm

The skill of Time Management
It would be hard to find a person who hasn’t read a book or taken a workshop on time management, or at the very least thought about time management. Everyone is interested in learning to use their time more wisely. However, the traditional time management wisdom seems to work well for about half the people, while others listen or read about planning, prioritising, scheduling, and doing, and then turn back to their normal way of doing things: notes tacked to every available surface, piles of paper everywhere, and several projects in the air at any given time. These two kinds of people are sometimes labeled left brain and right brain.
Strongly left-brained people see things as black and white. For them, time flows in monochromic order: they do one thing and then they go on to another. More right-brained people have the ability to see options at every turn. For them, things are rarely black and white, and their time is polychromic, with many things happening simultaneously. They can not only talk and drive a car at the same time; they can watch TV and read.
Do you already know which type you are?
